Keyboard Games: Lane Changes, Movement and Steering

The same arrow key can change one lane, move continuously, steer with inertia or take one tile step. Choose by the movement you want to control.

Pressing once and holding are different actions

Neon Divide

Read approaching barriers and choose one of three lanes.

Directional input
Left/Right or lowercase a/d changes the selected lane one step per key event. Up/Down does not steer this game.
Finish and failure
Continuous scoring, no fixed victory endpoint. Losing all three shields ends the run.

Feral Circuit

Move around the arena to avoid tracking enemies and collect charge orbs.

Directional input
Hold arrows or lowercase w/a/s/d for continuous movement. Space activates the phase dash only when DASH reaches 100%.
Finish and failure
Keep at least one of three cores until the 45-second countdown ends. Losing every core ends the attempt early.

Chrome Rally

Hold a racing line while the road changes and gate lines approach.

Directional input
Hold Left/Right or lowercase a/d to steer. Velocity eases over time rather than changing instantly.
Finish and failure
Reach 1,200 distance units over three laps before 72 seconds or BODY runs out.

Afterlight

Take tile steps to collect shards while shadows move through the board.

Directional input
Arrows or lowercase w/a/s/d take one tile step per key event. Holding a key can repeat steps through the keyboard repeat setting.
Finish and failure
Collect twelve shards before losing all three lives. No countdown; shadows continue moving between your steps.

Use the startup overlay, then check one movement

  1. Open the game and use Play. Wait for the countdown to finish.
  2. Try one directional input: one lane change in Neon, one tile step in Afterlight, or a short held movement in Feral or Chrome.
  3. Use P or Escape to pause before reading more. Resume the same attempt when ready.

For WASD alternatives, use lowercase letters; the current handlers match lowercase values. Arrow keys avoid that letter-case dependency. Neon and Chrome only use the horizontal pair; four-direction movement belongs to Feral and Afterlight.

In Chrome Rally, moving the pointer over the canvas sets a steering target. A held directional key takes priority, but releasing it can return to that pointer target. Keep the pointer outside the canvas when testing a purely keyboard-driven line, or start a fresh run to clear the target.

Check the action's condition before repeating it

Space does nothing in Feral Circuit

Check DASH. Space activates the phase dash at 100% charge, then consumes it. Pressing Space below that threshold does not create a dash; movement and collecting orbs still matter.

Neon Divide will not move farther left

There are three lanes. At the leftmost lane, another Left input cannot move farther. Read the next barrier and choose the required available lane; Up and Down do not add a fourth path.

Chrome Rally still drifts after I release a key

Steering velocity eases over time. Correct early rather than treating the car as an instant lane switch. Also check whether canvas pointer movement has set a steering target that takes effect after key release.

Afterlight moves more than one tile when I hold a key

Each key event moves one tile. Your keyboard's repeat events can produce more steps while held. Use separate short presses to inspect the next tile, and pause if you need time to read the shadows.

Checked 13 October 2026 against the four current native runtimes and normal input checks in this review. This page compares control behaviour; it does not measure keyboard latency, certify every keyboard layout or rank the games by difficulty. Other language introductions remain in their own review queue.
