In Draw 3 Klondike, the useful question is not “Which card should I turn next?” but “Which card will be on top of the waste after each packet?” Deal the stock once without rushing, record the exposed cards, and use a deliberate removal to change the next pass. This turns a seemingly random stock pile into a sequence you can inspect.
The method below applies to the common rule in which three cards are dealt from the stock, only the top waste card is playable, and a redeal preserves the order of the remaining cards. Some games limit redeals, change the final packet, or use automatic moves, so confirm the rules before relying on the cycle.
Draw 1 versus Draw 3

Draw 3 is usually harder because two cards in each full packet are covered by the third. They are not permanently locked, though. Playing an exposed waste card reveals the card immediately beneath it, and removing cards changes how the remaining stock is grouped on a later pass.
The stock-cycle rule
Imagine ten unknown stock cards labelled from top to bottom:

With a three-card deal, the first pass stops at these visible cards:

So the first inspection sequence is C, F, I, J. The final one-card packet matters: it exposes J even though position 10 is not a multiple of three.
Now suppose F is playable and you move it to the tableau. E is immediately uncovered on the waste. If you leave E there and complete the pass, the next redeal contains:

The second pass now stops at C, G, J. Removing one card changed the packet boundaries, so G—which was buried on the first pass—has become reachable. This is the central Draw 3 technique: make a useful move now partly for the card it exposes and partly for the alignment it creates later.
How to verify the method yourself
Use a practice deal with undo available, or recreate the ten-card sequence with physical cards.

This is a small, reproducible test. It does not depend on remembering suits or guessing which hidden card might help. If your game produces a different sequence, its redeal or waste rule differs from the model, and you should use the game's observed behavior instead.
A practical move order for Draw 3
1. Exhaust safe tableau moves first
Before touching the stock, reveal face-down tableau cards, move legal runs, and open empty columns when doing so does not destroy a needed sequence. Tableau information is stable; a stock click changes which waste card is available.
2. Map one complete stock pass
Click through once and note the exposed ranks and suits in order. A short list such as 7♣, Q♥, 4♠, A♦ is enough. Also note cards that become visible briefly after you play the top waste card.
3. Separate access moves from progress moves
A progress move uncovers a tableau card, creates an empty column, or builds a needed sequence. An access move changes the waste alignment so a buried stock card can surface later. The same move can do both, but naming the purpose prevents random clicking.
4. Recalculate after every stock removal
Once a waste card leaves the cycle, your old map is no longer exact. Finish the current pass carefully, then map the next pass again. Do not assume the old “every third card” positions still apply.
5. Preserve a bridge card when it unlocks more
Sending every low card to the foundation immediately can remove a rank or color needed to move a tableau stack. Before auto-moving a card, ask whether it is the only available bridge for the opposite-color card below it. Holding a playable card is useful only when you can name the move it protects.
When should you move a waste card?
Use this decision table before taking an exposed stock card:

“Usually” is deliberate. A legal move can still make a deal worse when it strands a lower card, fills the wrong empty column, or consumes one of a limited number of stock passes.
Limited redeals change the strategy
Unlimited redeals let you inspect a cycle, alter it, and inspect again. With only one or three passes, each stock removal spends part of a scarce resource.
Under a pass limit:
- map earlier and write less—rank, suit, and order are enough;
- prioritize moves that uncover tableau cards over cosmetic foundation progress;
- do not start a new stock pass until you have used every valuable card available in the current one;
- treat undo as a rule feature, not an assumption; some scoring modes penalize or disable it.
The final partial packet can also change after removals. A ten-card stock ends with one card; a nine-card stock ends with a full packet. That difference can remove the extra final stop you were expecting.
Common Draw 3 mistakes
Clicking through too quickly. You learn nothing about the sequence, then call the next pass unlucky.
Tracking only the visible cards. When you play a top waste card, inspect the card directly under it before dealing again. It may be the real target.
Assuming the cycle never changes. Every removed stock card can shift later packet boundaries. Re-map after a removal.
Moving all aces and twos automatically. Foundation moves are often good, but a low card may still be needed to support a tableau transfer.
Forcing an empty column too early. In standard Klondike, only a king can enter an empty tableau column. Emptying a column without an accessible king can reduce your options.
Treating a loss as proof of bad luck. Some deals are unwinnable under a particular rule set, but many losses come from an unrecorded stock cycle or an irreversible move. The method helps distinguish those cases; it does not prove that every deal has a solution.
Practice on a browser deal
Start with a version that clearly states whether it uses Draw 1 or Draw 3. Classic Solitaire Master supports both modes, so select Draw 3 before testing the cycle. Solitaire Treasures uses Draw 1 and is useful as a control: every stock card should become available in order.
